Where the Seasons Come to Rest

August 22, 2026 Rebecca Emmons

Summer gathered into jars, bottles, and bundles — small ways of carrying the season forward.

Every season leaves a gift, if we’re willing to notice it.

By the time August arrives, the sanctuary begins to feel different.

The first excitement of spring has softened, and the urgency of early summer gives way to quieter work. The mornings are cooler now as I wander the garden with a basket in hand, and now I’m asking a different question.

Not What is ready to harvest today?

But How can I carry this season forward?

If you’ve ever stepped inside my home in August, you’ll know there aren’t beautifully organized pantry shelves lined with matching jars. That’s simply not how I live.

Instead, the season quietly spills into every corner of the house.

Bundles of herbs drying wherever there’s room. Flowers and herbs strewn across my dining table. Freshly gathered berries are made into oxymels and stored in the freezer for future use. Infused oils catch the morning light, and jars of herbs seem to appear on every flat surface, each one patiently becoming something we’ll enjoy in the months ahead.

I smile every time I weave through it all because it reminds me that this isn’t clutter. It’s the sanctuary finding its way indoors.

Throughout the year, the land offers something different.

In spring, I gather nettles and cleavers for nourishing infusions, along with the first fresh goat milk that becomes soap and lotion. Summer fills the gardens with herbs for drying, flowers for infused oils, vegetables for the table, and berries that become oxymels to brighten the darker months. As autumn approaches, there will be seeds to save, roots to gather, and one more chance to listen before the land settles into winter.

The pantry and the apothecary have never felt like separate places to me. The herbs that season our meals are often the same plants that steep into tea, infuse into oils, or find their way into a healing salve. They nourish us in different ways, but they all begin with paying attention.

Lately I’ve been making small jars of fresh herb salts with tarragon, parsley, chives, garlic, and the tender green coriander seeds from the garden. They’re tucked away for no special occasion at all—simply for the pleasure of opening one on a cold January evening and remembering what August smelled like.

Every jar tells the story of a morning spent in the garden, an afternoon walking a forest path, or a quiet walk through the meadow with a basket in hand.

The seasons never really leave us.

We simply learn how to carry them forward.

As you move through these last weeks of summer, I hope you’ll take a moment to notice what your own corner of the world is offering. Whether it’s herbs from the garden, berries along a favorite trail, or simply the gift of slowing down long enough to pay attention, perhaps you’ll find a way to carry a little of this season with you into the months ahead.
