Ingredient Highlight...Holy Basil

Ocimum sanctum, Holy Basil or Tulsi is a medicinal plant in the mint family with a sweet, spicy aroma. It’s primary essential oil, eugenol is also present in cloves. It contains camphor and eucalyptol as well as flavonoids, vitamins and minerals. These constituents contribute to its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties and gives this plant its one of a kind scent.

Its Latin name, Sanctum, means sacred or holy while Ocimum identifies it as a member of the basil family. It is considered holy in Hindu culture. Tulsi in Sanskrit translates to the “immeasurable one” often seen as the Goddess of Abundance and Gratitude. Growing medicinal plants is a labor of love. My Tulsi patch was slow to start, insisted on gentle coaxing, time, and summer’s warmth. It is now a thriving, flourishing patch that’s provided plenty for my winter tea blends and has been a sanctuary for the bees. It’s with that abundance I felt I could incorporate some into a special soap.

I infused the wilted plant with gentle heat over several days to capture its aromatic compounds along with it’s skin nourishing constituents. . The oil was then strained and formulated into our Tulsi Goat Milk Soap. Like many creations inspired from the natural world, this small artisan formula grown with love is a one of a kind experience.
